RPA Use Cases in Manufacturing

Robotic Process Automation provides the tools and technologies that have the capability of fast-forwarding many aspects of the manufacturing pipeline. These tools give rise to what is known as ‘smart factories’ – interconnected smart devices, 3D printing, and much more.

That being said, the 2020 industry outlook on manufacturing from Deloitte suggests it still remains very much a pipe dream. Even less than 25% of the manufacturers surveyed were truly ready for the changes needed for the digital revolution. Many of the aspects related to the production and assembly are usually automated to a much higher degree compared to the operational and back-office processes. Here we are going to take a look at some of the processes that are automated using the RPA tools.

How to Use RPA in Manufacturing

Administration

Manufacturing specifically needs to tackle a plethora of different administrative problems due to its nature. This can cause unnecessary delays and pose an additional burden on the administrative departments. RPA could prove to be the tool that you are looking for.

Robotic Process Automation brings an array of different tools for handling the challenges. Report and dossier creation is one such task – automation tools could be used for curating a crystal-clear dossier. Reports are necessary for getting an accurate and functional view of the whole production. This helps in making decisions that are dependant on these actions and deciding the next course of action.

Monitoring

Automation tools play a key role in real-time process monitoring and analytics. These tools help extract non-invasive data that is valuable from the evaluation and analytical point of view. They help get a wider view as well as specific detail of the executed processes.

They are also invaluable in real-time reporting, which allows the manufacturers and suppliers to calculate the optimal inventory levels. Millions of dollars are invested in these processes, so determining the optimal level is utterly important. They come in handy for altering the current operations of the processes based on customer demand.

Data migration

Data migration is a part of the manufacturing process. Whenever there is a need for moving data from one system to another, possibly from the older system to the newer one, you need to consider the intricacies and pitfalls associated with this process. You need to ensure consistency as well as the regularity of this transition. More importantly, you have to make sure that the integration of the acquisitions causes as little disruption as possible to the already existing workflow.

The risk associated with manual performance is, in general, very high. And higher the risk, the more delay, and harm it is going to cause to the whole process. Moreover, all the components of the systems are usually found to be highly interconnected.

This worsens the situation as the error could be accumulating over time and the issue becomes apparent only when it’s too late. RPA tools come in handy in these situations as they not only speed up the workflow but also automates a lot of the pipeline. This makes the data migration task more immune to manual errors.

Inventory control

Inventory management, by very nature, is a labor-intensive task. A big percentage of the tasks related to inventory control are back-office jobs. Some of the key challenges that make the job of inventory management ten times more challenging are inconsistency and variability in customer demand and supplier delivery.

This leads to suboptimal performance and inventory turnover. Automation tools give your organization the power needed to address these issues and meet the fluctuating demand. AI-based bots could be used for automating the procurement processes. Moreover, as most of the paperwork becomes digital and you have higher visibility across the processes, the operational efficiency becomes higher. This helps identify the aspects in which the processes are lacking and could be improved.

Digital communication

The automation tools bring tons of power to the table. Most of these are powered by some of the latest technologies and features tools like natural language processing, language detection, and sentiment detection.

These features are invaluable for digitizing and automating communications. They can be used for automating, for example, the email and chats with the suppliers. Using the latest technologies they can automatically respond to the client messages and address their needs and queries.
